Whenever we talk about Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purifiers, one acronym dominates the conversation: TDS. You might have seen technicians testing your water with a digital pen, or read about it in purifier manuals. But what exactly is TDS, and more importantly, how much of it should actually be in the water you give to your family?
There is a massive misconception that "Zero TDS" means the purest, healthiest water. Letβs bust that myth right now.
What is TDS?
TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids. It represents the total concentration of dissolved substances in your water. This includes harmful heavy metals and industrial chemicals (which we want to remove), but it also includes essential inorganic salts like Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Sodium (which our bodies desperately need).
The Danger of "Zero" TDS (Dead Water)
An aggressive RO membrane can strip away up to 99% of all dissolved solids, bringing the TDS level down to 5 or 10 ppm. Drinking this highly demineralized "dead water" is actually bad for your health.
- Mineral Deficiency: Your body relies on drinking water for a portion of its daily calcium and magnesium intake. Removing these minerals entirely can contribute to deficiencies over time.
- Bitter Taste: Water with extremely low TDS tastes flat, bitter, and highly acidic.
- Acidity: Highly purified RO water tends to be slightly acidic, which can cause gastric issues for some individuals upon prolonged consumption.
So, What is the Ideal TDS Level?
According to health experts and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS):
- Below 50 ppm: Unacceptable (Lacks essential minerals).
- 50 - 150 ppm: Excellent (The sweet spot for RO purified water. It is safe, sweet-tasting, and retains crucial minerals).
- 150 - 300 ppm: Good (Acceptable for drinking if the source water is municipal treated water).
- Above 500 ppm: Unsafe (Water feels heavy, tastes salty/brackish, and poses severe risks of kidney stones and gastrointestinal issues).
"A good RO purifier doesn't just blindly remove everything from the water. It intelligently strips out the toxins while preserving the minerals."
How Mistryo Experts Maintain the Balance
If you live in an area with hard borewell water, your raw TDS might be 1500+ ppm. When you book a verified RO technician from Mistryo, they do not just change your filters and leave.
Our experts use digital TDS meters to test both your raw tap water and your purified output. They meticulously adjust the TDS Controller (MTDS valve) inside your machine to blend a safe amount of purified UV water back into the RO water. This guarantees that your final drinking water is 100% free from bacteria and heavy metals, but perfectly balanced at a healthy 80 to 120 ppm.
Is your RO water tasting unusually bitter or metallic? Book a Mistryo expert today for a complete water quality health check and TDS calibration.
